FINTAN'S STORY

A little Irish mythology in your favourite drink

Like so many Irish stories, Fintan’s begins with a tall tale...

According to Celtic mythology, Fintan mac Bóchra was the first man to

set foot in Ireland.

He arrived as part of a three-ark fleet led by Noah’s (yes, that Noah) grand-daughter Cesaire. Noah had deemed them not good enough for his ark, so Cesaire decided to build her own and sail west to a land without people and therefore, without sinners…

so no massive flood coming.

Off they sailed. 150 women and three men. Three arks. In an epic seven-year voyage, during which Cesaire fell in love with Fintan and two of the arks sank.

Finally, from a tower in Spain, Cesaire spotted Ireland. They set off, landing at Dún na mBarc (Donemark), literally down the road from where we make Fintan’s today.

So Cesaire was the first woman to set foot in Ireland, followed swiftly by Fintan,

making him the first man.

Overwhelmed by the pressures of being the only man among 50 women, Fintan ran for the hills and hid in a cave. As the floods drew near, he dreamed he was a salmon and when he woke, he'd become one. This knack for shape-shifting meant Fintan lived for 5000 years, variously as a man, a salmon, a hawk, a deer and a boar.

What became of Cesaire? She died of a broken heart. Fintan became “Fintan the Wise” and advisor to numerous kings and high kings of Ireland.

ABOUT US

Fintan’s began around a dinner table in West Cork when the friends who’d been drinking our home-made tonics, shrubs and beers for years finally persuaded us to take their “You should sell this!” comments seriously. So here we are.

Our recipes are the result of many years of experimentation, tweaking and cross-over as the lessons learned from brewing beer fed into kombucha, kefir and, somehow inevitably, tonics.

We hope you enjoy drinking Fintan’s as much as we enjoy making it.
